Sr. Cyber Security Engineer

This is a direct hire position after a short-term contract period. Local, Houston-based candidates preferred.

Duration: Full-time, direct hire after 3 to 6 month contract

Location: Houston, TX - local candidates preferred

Pay Rate: $55-$65/hour

The ideal candidate will be required to perform security monitoring and incident response tasks. This position requires expert-level knowledge of advanced interconnected security systems and how they relate to the current threat landscape, with the ability to communicate and present to executive level management.

Must possess knowledge in various security practices/concepts including:

  • Computer networking concepts and protocols, and network security methodologies, incident handling methodologies
  • Cybersecurity and privacy principles, cyber threats and vulnerabilities
  • Authentication, authorization, and access control methods
  • Host/network access control mechanisms (e.g. , access control list, capabilities lists)
  • Intrusion detection methodologies and techniques for detecting host and network-based intrusions
  • Operating systems
  • Key concepts in security management (e.g. , Release Management, Patch Management)
  • Virtual Private Network (VPN) security
  • Risk management processes (e.g. , methods for assessing and mitigating risk)
  • Network services and protocols interactions that provide network communications
  • Incident response and handling methodologies
  • Information technology (IT) security principles and methods (e.g. , firewalls, demilitarized zones, encryption)
  • Network access, identity, and access management (e.g. , public key infrastructure, Oauth, OpenID, SAML, SPML)
  • Network traffic analysis methods
  • How traffic flows across the network (e.g. , Transmission Control Protocol [TCP] and Internet Protocol [IP], Open System Interconnection Model [OSI], Information Technology Infrastructure Library, current version [ITIL])
  • Packet-level analysis
  • System and application security threats and vulnerabilities (e.g. , buffer overflow, mobile code, cross-site scripting, Procedural Language/Structured Query Language [PL/SQL] and injections, race conditions, covert channel, replay, return-oriented attacks, malicious code)
  • Knowledge in cyber defense Service Provider reporting structure and processes within one's own organization
  • Network Attacks - what constitutes a network attack and a network attack's relationship to both threats and vulnerabilities
  • Laws, regulations, policies, and ethics as they relate to cybersecurity and privacy
  • Specific operational impacts of cybersecurity lapses
  • Security system design tools, methods, and techniques
  • Reading and interpreting signatures (e.g. , snort)
  • Developing and deploying signatures
  • Assessing security controls based on cybersecurity principles and tenets (e.g. , CIS CSC, NIST SP 800-53, Cybersecurity Framework, or similar)

Minimum Qualifications

  • Proven, enterprise-level experience in cybersecurity, incident response, network security
  • Bachelor's degree preferred or equivalent experience
  • CISSP, CISM, or CASP, or similar / willingness to obtain certification in first six months
